Maggie Maurer picks and chooses her modelling work carefully. “I do it with my heart,” the Potsdam-born beauty tells Vogue. “If someone gives me theirs, I’ll give them mine.” When her friend Fran Burns called Maggie ahead of London Fashion Week to scope her out for Nensi Dojaka’s autumn/winter 2022 show, the German model’s response was, “Wicked”. Maurer had been watching the city’s bright young star for a while, and was keen to throw her support behind Nensi. The catch? She’s four months pregnant, and Dojaka’s mere whispers of dresses are not for the faint of heart.

“People who know me know I am always here for a saucy moment,” says Paris-based Maggie, who has been lending her striking looks to brands including Calvin Klein and Maison Margiela for almost a decade. Conversations with Dojaka’s team centred around celebrating the strength of women, and so Maurer, who firmly believes that “women’s bodies are like superpowers”, signed up.

Maurer did not announce her pregnancy on Instagram as “it’s not my thing”. Rather, the Nensi Dojaka runway was a statement about the power of womanhood.

She has been touched by the reaction to her walking the runway wearing a nude translucent sequined slip that outlined her baby bump. “I felt strong,” notes Maggie, who says she has only ever seen one image of another pregnant model on the runway while walking for Alexander McQueen. “I think it’s quite shocking – in a good way. It grounds people because it says this is the most real it can be.” Having never been sure “how this moment would work because [her] body is [her] job”, it felt especially uplifting and beautiful, she notes now.

While we won’t see Maurer in Milan because she has doctors appointments she can’t miss, something tells us Parisian brands will come calling. “I’ll play it by ear,” says the Schiaparelli muse, whose baby was still her secret when she walked the brand’s haute couture spring/summer 2022 runway earlier this year. As always, Maggie will only say yes to more catwalk moments if the brand feels right. “If they care about it, I’ll care about it,” she asserts. It’s this attitude that makes her beloved amongst her industry peers, and why everyone was especially delighted to learn her special news.
