5 Things To Know About Richard Quinn’s Dark Couture-Inspired AW22 Show
Richard Quinn’s autumn/winter 2022 show celebrates the golden age of haute couture. “Dark couture”, as he calls it, has informed the collection which includes oversized vinyl hats, cocoon-shaped separates and majestic feather dresses. The Lewisham-born designer loved the idea of paying homage to haute couture during its golden age. Accordingly, Quinn explored styles that were more synonymous with fashion in the ’50s and ’60s than today. But of course, no Quinn show would be complete without elements of PVC. “We’ve included oversized PVC hats that look as though they’ve been polished. Dark couture is how I would describe the collection; it oozes a real sexiness,” he shares.

One of Quinn’s most intricate designs this season is an embroidered hooded dress. Upon closer inspection, you’ll see that it’s actually engulfed in tiny feathers. Consider it Quinn’s love letter to those who adore the vivaciousness of his technicolour evening gowns. “It’s essential that we offer our bespoke clients something special,” asserts Quinn. After-dark dresses have also been fashioned from beautiful silks and 3D embroidery. “Setting an almost impossible task, then making it happen is what drives the team and I,” he adds.

Quinn and his team longed to create intensely tactile pieces, so the Peckham-based designer’s main objective was for every element of his meticulous craftsmanship to be visible from all angles. “I love the idea of the audience seeing the hand embroidery and hand-brushed detailing up close,” he notes.

Enlisting an orchestra to play at the show was Quinn’s first port of call this season. Inspired by his love of live music, he sought out the London Chamber Orchestra to help set the mood. “I used to play the French horn in an orchestra when I was younger, so I wanted the audience to experience how moving live music can be when paired with a show,” explains Richard.

Quinn chose Lindley Hall in Westminster to showcase his “emotional” collection in front of an intimate audience. “I had used the grand sister hall before, but I wanted something smaller. It’s big enough to carry out a spectacle, but still small enough for people to engage, feel the emotion and focus on the contents of the collection,” he says.
