Rihanna Just Wore The Most Noughties Jeans Of All Time

Like the rest of the fashion world, Rihanna is on a Y2K streak, as evidenced by her latest date-night outfit. For dinner at Carbone with A$AP Rocky on 18 February, the Fenty icon selected another bomber jacket – this one courtesy of R13 – which she paired with a vintage Mets T-shirt. (“Ya gotta believe!”) Adding a touch of glamour to her look: a pair of Amina Muaddi’s crystal-strap leather sandals and a Dior choker from John Galliano’s autumn/winter 2004 collection, which nodded to Vogue’s illustrated Edwardian-era covers.

It’s Rihanna’s choice of denim, though, that makes the outfit so compelling: a pair of rhinestone-studded Martine Rose jeans in a mid-rise style that could have been lifted out of Lorelai Gilmore’s messy Stars Hollow closet circa 2003. Rih has long been enamoured with the British designer’s creations, frequently wearing her double-breasted blazers and football shirts after Demna Gvasalia hired Rose as a consultant at Balenciaga in 2015. In the summer of 2021, the lingerie mogul repeatedly wore the brand’s highlighter-green leather trousers, again with Amina Muaddi sandals (apparently Rihanna’s version of sensible all-weather footwear).

“I like wonky people, I like wonky things,” Rose told Vogue of her creations. “The wonkiness is in every element. It’s the casting, it’s the cutting, it’s the fabrics, it’s how we show. It’s the main thing.” The main thing – except for sex, which is perhaps the biggest source of inspiration for her deliberately perverse collections. “Kink, sexy – sex is really important… Honestly, so many times I’ve gone, ‘Fucking hell, is that too much?’ But I always think that’s a really good place for me.” And a great place for Rihanna, too.
