Parlez-vous français? If not, “toi et moi” translates to “you and me”, and in the jewellery world, it describes a particular – and currently deeply popular – style of ring. Explainer: a toi et moi ring features a coiled band, with two gemstones nestled side by side where it meets around the finger. As the name suggests, the style is highly romantic – it symbolises two entities meeting as one.
It’s why toi et moi rings are a popular engagement ring choice. “What could be more romantic than a toi et moi ring, where two stones meet to symbolise the union of two lovers?” asks British Vogue’s jewellery and watch director, Rachel Garrahan. “Dating back centuries, the style became famous in 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais with one. Traditionally, they feature two different stones in matching sizes and cuts, but today, jewellers like Messika and Jemma Wynne play with contrasts in gem cuts, sizes and settings for a more contemporary look.”
Jackie Kennedy famously redesigned her toi et moi-style Van Cleef & Arpels engagement ring. The emerald and diamond jewel was originally surrounded by linear baguette diamonds, which she ultimately had replaced with grander, marquise cut diamonds.
The style has plenty of history attached, but modern A-listers are proving its appeal is timeless. Sebastian Bear-McClard proposed to Emily Ratajkowski with a jaw-dropping toi et moi ring: an 18-carat gold band decorated with a 2-carat princess cut diamond next to a tilted 3-carat pear-shaped diamond designed by Alison Lou.
Ariana Grande wears a toi et moi on her left hand, too. Adorned with an oval cut diamond, set on an east-west axis on a platinum band, the singer’s ring also features a delicate pearl (which her fans believe was taken from her grandfather’s tie-pin). Alan Ferguson proposed to musician Solange with a unique toi et moi ring. The singer, who split from the director in 2019, was presented with an art deco gold ring, embellished with a prong-set square cut diamond flanked by an emerald cut diamond. The key difference? The slight gap between the precious stones.
Toi et moi rings aren’t only for proposals. Kylie Jenner unveiled her own on Instagram last year (the pregnant mogul wears it on her left hand, but not her ring finger), along with daughter Stormi’s matching mini-me style, complete with downsized diamonds. “Daddy got us matching rings,” Kylie wrote online. Quite the gift from beau Travis Scott.
More recently, Machine Gun Kelly proposed to Megan Fox with a ring designed by British jeweller Stephen Webster, incorporating both of their birthstones. The emerald and diamond are “set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love”, he explained in an Instagram post.
